PLAYLIST for OCTOBER 14, 2009

BRASS SHOUT: A mini-festival for the brass instruments used in jazz;
trumpets, trombones, French Horns and tubas.

We start with the Canadian Brass, who use all these brass instruments in their salute to Louis Armstrong, followed immediately by trumpeter Rod McGaha, who proudly carries on the Armstrong tradition. Up next are two latin trumpeters, Etienne Charles and Claudio Roditi, both of whom are equally at ease with the music of their homelands and the jazz repertoire.

We pause to sample two upcoming Ottawa concerts, by the Geggie Project with Marilyn Crispell [October 31 at the NAC Fourth Stage], and by Rake-Star and a Gamelan group [October 27 at the NAC Fourth Stage].

Now we hear trombone specialist Andy Martin tear up a couple of standards, followed by trumpeter Chris Pasin, also playing a jazz standard. Then we luxuriate in the trumpet, trombone, French Horn and tuba of Dave Douglas’ Brass Ecstasy, which gives us a rare chance to hear the greatest living French Horn player in jazz, Vincent Chaney, as well as great solo and ensemble work by his colleagues. We round things off with two trumpet greats recorded when they were acting as musical ambassadors
for the United States, Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie.
